I totally get the point of this post and agree that there are a lot of amazing bloggers that get overlooked. However, I really don't think that it's a popularity contest. (I've been involved in a few big-type events like the ones mentioned and have turned down a few more.) I think a lot of it is that the people who set up the campaigns like to be around people that they know and like (and also, it IS business - they want to get the most "bang for their bucks"). They also talk amongst themselves (much like we bloggers do). They talk about things like who's easy to work with and who are blog divas (in the bad way)...

I think that the biggest thing that we need to figure out is how to get more wonderful bloggers (who are interested in these types of trips/things) on the radar of more hosting companies. (I just happen to be fortunate because I live in NYC where a lot of events and things are held, so I naturally get to interact more with various decision makers.)

Well here there, I'm such a slacker. Long time no comment on your bloggity blog. I remember the old days when we used to comment daily. Life sure has gotten busy.

I remember those sorority days. We called it a "Panda Pass", cause pandas were our mascot.

I saw all the same twitters last week too. I rolled my eyes, just a tad too much. It was kind of getting annoying.

I agree with everything that has been said here. Why can't they randomly pick some people besides the same people. We need some fresh blood. I want to hear someone else's opinion sometime.

I'll echo what Mrs. Flinger said - that it is moreso about the community. And yes, I read the tweets and see the perspectives and yours is genuine, obviously, and heartfelt.

While it may not be for me, I don't think it's my place to say whether someone else might consider it their "cup of tea." (The constant marketing/selling/branding of themselves and their site) Have I benefitted from being in the right place at the right time and surrounded by the right people? You bet! And there is nothing wrong with that. It isn't an all expenze paid trip to Tahiti, but if something speaks to me and I'm available, I'll consider it. Hope that makes sense.

All in all, this is a big place - with room for everyone, and I would like to see the PR companies to reach out to every corner of it!

Yes, thank you. Just, yes. When MOM 101 yesterday suggested that if you just write well, they will come, I admit that I scoffed. I write well - yes, I do, I can say that, after 20 years of professional experience. I write well. And still, the don't come. I admit that I don't know how to play the game.

This post? Wish they still did the Perfect Post Awards (and anyone want to do that with me? Revive a monthly list of awesome posts?).

I'm so far away from all of that I might as well be in another country entirely, but you make some really good points and I hope that the "pickers" pay attention because only good things can come from a larger pool.

I love this post. I am one of the lucky Frigidaire mamas (woo hoo!) Because Our dishwasher is 11 plus years old and was literally to the "let's kick it as hard as we can stage of death" last year...so I am looking forward to a shiny new toy" even if it's a kitchen appliance and not a vibrator. Tee hee.

But seriously, the Frigidaire campaign was one bloggers had to apply for and I thought it was very well thought out. I was already on Mom Central and Mother Talk's e-mail lists so I believe the list of bloggers was compiled from that central group of contacts. We were asked to rank from top to bottom which appliance campaign we wanted to apply for. A few really lucky bloggers received all the appliances. (sniff...not me)

I've worked in PR years ago and from the few blog outreach things I've been involved in it seems as though PR professionals are honestly wanting to develop a genuine good working relationship with bloggers, it's just that for them they are so new at this that the bloggers who are most vocal and visible in the review type networks tend to be the ones they gravitate to. I guess because they have proven themselves so to speak. But I do agree that they need to widen their scope of reach. There are so many more incredibly talented bloggers than the usual suspects.

I think bloggers tend to look at things in our own blogosphere type way and "assume" that PR firms should totally know who to reach out to, but it's just not that simple.

You're already networking like crazy with Room 704 so just keep it up sistah!

I'm reading these comments and I'm seeing my friends and their ideals and perspective and I realize THIS is why I'm here. Catherine, Tanis, Megan, Jenny, etc etc etc People I've read for ever and met in person and loved "For long time" are here supporting you and us and the community at large. There are friends here that I can't wait to meet in BlogHer.

I think the part of this possibly brings "us" closer because while we are not traipsing around the world at large, we are understanding and enjoying the community. I would hope if (if) I ever got invited to something I would not forget that portion.

I know of bloggers who keep their heads on their shoulder, get to do fun stuff, but remember why they are here. As long as that is in place, great.

Now for the marketers to offer up the possibility and we'll be set, yes?

(P.S. "Although a cruise *would* be nice. *SHAKES HEAD*

I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d rather have the friendships and the space to write and the COMMUNITY.

Also, the vibrators."

Fucking LOVE ME SOME HBM!!!)

I'm here from twitter, too.

I got to go on the Disney trip and it wasn't b/c I was hooked up into 11 moms (I'll say it.) or b/c I have big traffic (I've never had more than 10,000 hits/month) or b/c I'm bffs with some bloggy superstar.

I'm pretty sure I just was faithful with something, or wrote one thing that made someone smile. Or maybe I was just filling the spot of B-list mommy blogger.

Point being: You never know. Your inbox might have an invite now. Everybody's just a normal person. And the girls I met on the trip? They might have a few more bloggy perks than I've had...but still they were normal. And pumped to get a Disney trip. Just like you'd be.

(Did that come across snarky? I hope not. I really mean it as an encouragement. I was SHOCKED to be chosen.)

I hear you on this one. My fatal flaw is that I'm not JUST a Mommy blogger, or JUST a book blogger, or JUST a food blogger, etc. I blog about everything that makes me ME. So I don't really fit into any of the established groups out there. But you know what, that's OK. Sure, I'd love a free family trip to Disney or a kitchen full of new appliances, but I never considered my blog more than just a way to make connections to others. Every now and then I get a free book or a sample of a product, and I think that's pretty cool. It'll have to suffice.

I'm never included in the free junkets or give aways.

PR companies shy away from me.

I can't understand it.

Must have something to do with all the vibrators and rotational boob talk I've got going on.

One thing is for certain though, regardless of whether or not I ever become visible to a PR firm, I'm so thrilled to be part of this community and to have met women like you.

(And not just cuz you have a great rack either.)

MoreThanMommy, I could not agree more with you. By narrowing the pool and very carefully selecting a smaller number of candidates, they could put more resources into having a few strong messages rather than a more diluted message that's too spread out to be effective. Reading about a great trip or company or service on one powerhouse blog or by one great writer is, to me, VERY influential. Reading about the same product, service, or trip from 20 different bloggers/twitterers just turns me off--brand fatigue.
