More shots for the Kaiser yesterday. He still took it really well. He was well past nap time by the time the needles hit his thighs, so he was more annoyed than at the 4 month appointment – but still less annoyed than being trapped in the car for a long road trip. He’s already been up and trying to crawl, so his thighs must feel okay, he’s had two 2 hour naps (!), got grizzly and wasn’t a fan of the Tylenol. Is now trying to annex my computer and has been rerouted to chew on some other valuable piece of equipment, since the 2 dollar whale and the plastic links just weren’t equitable replacements for the MacBook.
Had all sorts of really unhelpful information on the sheet from the ped. Again with the “Most children sleep through the night at this age” Yeah, really? Let’s play data collection on that one – did your kid sleep through the night at 6 months? And my definition of through the night is you put child in crib at night and don’t see him or her till morning. I know Pantley defines it as 5 hours – and even in our house of ill sleep repute we can get that – but sadly it’s from 8-1am – whoopee.)
She told us that in another month we could start giving Kaiser food from the table. We just nodded and said okay.
What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.

I agree what she doesn’t know can’t hurt her. Amy was getting food from the table at 6mths.
I go to a mum’s group right? None of our babies slept through the night reliably at 6mths. One baby slept through 5/7 nights (bitch), but none of the others even thought about dropping the night feed at 6mths.
I think 12mths is more realistic for sleeping through, simply from what other people have said. Not Amy though, apparently she doesn’t listen to the people I do.
I hope his legs feel better soon.

The first time my son slept through the night (like put him in his crib and don’t hear from him till morning) he was 16 months old? I think it’s happened about 10-15 times since then.

Both of my kids didn’t sleep through the night until they were 18 months…I know, not what you wanted to hear.

That picture of him eating — what is he eating? — is fabulous. I’m glad you’re confident enough to ignore the ped. I wasn’t that confident until my second child, more’s the pity.

That pic is adorable! I fed my kids table food before six months…as long as it was something they could mush up easily! Hope his legs feel better soon! Although it tends to be harder on the mom’s than the kids! 🙂
Sad to say, and feel free to call me a bitch…both my kids started sleeping through the night (except every now and then) when they were three months old. I know I was lucky, I’ll be the first to admit it! It may have something to do with bottle feeding vs. nursing??? Or just that my kids liked sleep? My friend has a 15 month old who just started sleeping through the night about a month ago… It depends on the kid I think!
The Other Dawn
I am a dark, dark, cloud. My kids are 3 and 20 months. They still do not reliably sleep through the night every night. Between the coughing and the peeing, it’s a round the clock partee in the Shew house.
As for the baby stage sleeping? I always heard that something magical happens at 13 pounds. Sadly, that milestone happened at about 15 minutes old for Noise, and 10 months for Funk. So, too early for Noise and too late for Funk. I guess it just depends on whether you think he’s nursing at night for comfort or food.

Damn that’s a funny picture. What’s he eating, anyway?

Yeah, Jack didn’t sleep through the night until he was 12 months. It’s still spotty, too.
Super cute kid!
Hydes Like Us
You’re doing just fine. Onion wasn’t sleeping through the night until at least 8 months, and he was definitely eating off the table before then!! Big hungry growing boys needs their veggies!

Please don’t hate me.
The Little Mister started sleeping 9:30pm-7:30am at eleven weeks.
There have been nights of waking up early or staying up late, but he’s pretty consistent.
As far as food…we have food allergies on both sides of the family, and a lot of them, so we’re waiting to start anything solid until six months. And even then it will only be rice cereal for awhile…
Oh, The Joys
That photo is classic!

He is so cute! Poor baby – shots! Have a good day. See ya.

OMG, I love that shot! It’s like he’s hiding what he’s eating. I hear ya on the shots. I wonder who its’ more painful for, parent or child?

at what age is it ok for me to nibble his cheeks?

Funny, when we moved Braden to his own room around 3/4 months old, he slept through the night. In fact, we used to go in and look at him every night before we went to sleep b/c we missed him. !!!
We don’t have to worry about missing him anymore. Yeah.
Jenny
Hailey didn’t sleep through the night until she was two. At six months I was going on 3 hours of sleep a night, tops.
BeeRepartee
My kids were sleeping early, but they slept away their first year.
I had the kids’ food grinder glued to my hip. That thing was invaluable!!
Cute photo…

that is one cute baby! yummy! and I’m not talking about his dinner.
I’m with you on ignoring the doc! Give the good food and let him learn how to chew. My sister in law gives her almost three year olds jar babyfood still and she spoon feeds it to them. OH man! did I just throw her under the bus or what? but really, my seventeen month old walks around eating chips and dip like he’s at a cocktail party what’s the big deal? let them EAT!! It’s one of the great life pleasures!

We hit the six month mark and got the same lecture from our ped. I panicked that we were ruining our daughter by not forcing her – yeah right – to sleep through the night. One day around 7 months we steeled ourselves to let her cry it out, and of course that night she slept through. She has pretty much been sleeping through ever since (and we never did make her cry it out, ugh.)
I think they truly just don’t do it until they are ready.
We didn’t give Emma table food until 9 months, but I wish we had started earlier.

That picture is too cute! Glad to hear the little guy did well at his appointment and with his shots.
Baby A was breastfed for the first 14 months so sleeping through the night was a complete mystery to me. This is a very new concept in our house. Although S did a lot better as a baby and was seriously sleeping through the night by I guess the 6 month point. Every child is different.
Lisa (the girls' moma)
What the HECK is he eating? Is it a pickle? Seriously, I must know.

Cute baby!

I don’t know if “sleeping through the night” can be defined as “force-feed at midnight, nap, wide awake, force-feed at 2 am, sleep like the dead until 9am, force-feed…” but that is what Amos gives us.
I’m beginning to think there is no such thing as ‘normal.’
Great blog!
SAHMmy Says
If YOU slept only 5 hours would you call it sleeping throught the night? No way. I totally agree that 8-12 hours after “nighty-night” would be considered a good night’s sleep. My baby just turned one and I’m still waiting to get more than 4 hours at a stretch. I just posted on my crappy pediatrician–how well does your MD check your little one over?
