When I was in grad school, I was the Recruitment Adviser for my sorority. They were in a rough patch and they decided the way to air their feelings was through one of those fishbowl activities where they sat in a circle and tossed a bear around – whoever had the bear got to talk.
Some members were feeling excluded, overlooked, unimportant. It happens. One of the seniors, who really, was so funny and such a nut, and … now that I think of it …. she was exactly like Victoria. Heh.
So this girl says, “Look, the four of us (meaning she and her 3 BFFs) are very close, we are – but there’s no reason it can’t be “the five of us” or “the forty-five of us” and I’m sorry if I’ve ever made you feel left out.”
That has stuck with me. I’m not the best at pulling others into my secure circle – I need a damn tshirt to advertise to the world “it could be ‘just the five of us'”

I was bugged a couple weeks ago when a bunch of peeps got to go to Disney for a weekend.
By bugged, I mean, ragingly jealous. I’ll totes admit that – I would have LOVED to take my kid and my hubs to Florida for a weekend. Oh, and of course learned a lot of stuff. And met new people.
But there was more to it than that. There have been at least three trips, one conference, and some HUGE company giveaways/loaners recently. Now, my understanding is that sponsors/companies reached out to these bloggers – there was no announcement, application and selection – there was no pool of applicants or volunteers ….
… it SEEMS that I see the same names going to these really freaking cool invite only functions. Like a group got picked by company A, so when company B decides to do the same thing, they check out who company A invited and pick them.
Which hey, they are paying the bill so CLEARLY they can do what they want. And the people they are choosing to go to these things? effing awesome. I mean, it’s not like I’m looking down on any of them – they rawk and have worked their asses off to be noticed for good things.
My ‘but’ is … and this goes back to the opening of this rather random post … by companies doing the hand selecting, they will forever keep their pool of knowledge to “just the four” when really, I *think* there’s a lot to be said for a knowledge pool of “just the five of us” or “just the forty-five of us” … and the companies are short changing all of us when they hand pick. The networking that goes on at these events is frequently the most important part. I can prove it – look at Room 704 – the blog that originated as a room party and now won’t shut up – without skipping a session and gabbing nonstop for a couple hours about the possibilities of a new blog – 704 wouldn’t exist – which would suck, because I’m thrilled about that whole jobjob every day.
I wonder what other awesome could happen if the knowledge pool got larger ….

I love this post. I am one of the lucky Frigidaire mamas (woo hoo!) Because Our dishwasher is 11 plus years old and was literally to the “let’s kick it as hard as we can stage of death” last year…so I am looking forward to a shiny new toy” even if it’s a kitchen appliance and not a vibrator. Tee hee.
But seriously, the Frigidaire campaign was one bloggers had to apply for and I thought it was very well thought out. I was already on Mom Central and Mother Talk’s e-mail lists so I believe the list of bloggers was compiled from that central group of contacts. We were asked to rank from top to bottom which appliance campaign we wanted to apply for. A few really lucky bloggers received all the appliances. (sniff…not me)
I’ve worked in PR years ago and from the few blog outreach things I’ve been involved in it seems as though PR professionals are honestly wanting to develop a genuine good working relationship with bloggers, it’s just that for them they are so new at this that the bloggers who are most vocal and visible in the review type networks tend to be the ones they gravitate to. I guess because they have proven themselves so to speak. But I do agree that they need to widen their scope of reach. There are so many more incredibly talented bloggers than the usual suspects.
I think bloggers tend to look at things in our own blogosphere type way and “assume” that PR firms should totally know who to reach out to, but it’s just not that simple.
You’re already networking like crazy with Room 704 so just keep it up sistah!

I’m so far away from all of that I might as well be in another country entirely, but you make some really good points and I hope that the “pickers” pay attention because only good things can come from a larger pool.

Yes, thank you. Just, yes. When MOM 101 yesterday suggested that if you just write well, they will come, I admit that I scoffed. I write well – yes, I do, I can say that, after 20 years of professional experience. I write well. And still, the don’t come. I admit that I don’t know how to play the game.
This post? Wish they still did the Perfect Post Awards (and anyone want to do that with me? Revive a monthly list of awesome posts?).

I’ll echo what Mrs. Flinger said – that it is moreso about the community. And yes, I read the tweets and see the perspectives and yours is genuine, obviously, and heartfelt.
While it may not be for me, I don’t think it’s my place to say whether someone else might consider it their “cup of tea.” (The constant marketing/selling/branding of themselves and their site) Have I benefitted from being in the right place at the right time and surrounded by the right people? You bet! And there is nothing wrong with that. It isn’t an all expenze paid trip to Tahiti, but if something speaks to me and I’m available, I’ll consider it. Hope that makes sense.
All in all, this is a big place – with room for everyone, and I would like to see the PR companies to reach out to every corner of it!

Well here there, I’m such a slacker. Long time no comment on your bloggity blog. I remember the old days when we used to comment daily. Life sure has gotten busy.
I remember those sorority days. We called it a “Panda Pass”, cause pandas were our mascot.
I saw all the same twitters last week too. I rolled my eyes, just a tad too much. It was kind of getting annoying.
I agree with everything that has been said here. Why can’t they randomly pick some people besides the same people. We need some fresh blood. I want to hear someone else’s opinion sometime.

I totally get the point of this post and agree that there are a lot of amazing bloggers that get overlooked. However, I really don’t think that it’s a popularity contest. (I’ve been involved in a few big-type events like the ones mentioned and have turned down a few more.) I think a lot of it is that the people who set up the campaigns like to be around people that they know and like (and also, it IS business – they want to get the most “bang for their bucks”). They also talk amongst themselves (much like we bloggers do). They talk about things like who’s easy to work with and who are blog divas (in the bad way)…
I think that the biggest thing that we need to figure out is how to get more wonderful bloggers (who are interested in these types of trips/things) on the radar of more hosting companies. (I just happen to be fortunate because I live in NYC where a lot of events and things are held, so I naturally get to interact more with various decision makers.)
