Last night I was missing my grandpa.
At first I thought it was because my mom had mentioned today that he’d been such a beanpole build that it was no surprise that those genes combined with Scout’s genes would make such a tall and skinny boy.
Then I realized that we are entering the Easter season and the last day I saw him was Easter Sunday. In all these years, I haven’t quite been able to move past the Good Friday aspect of the season and into the resurrection celebration.
So it is no wonder that I am missing him. It is my season of missing him, as I have done for half my life now.
…
Last year I was “great with child” and had no desire to observe Lent. This year I feel a pull to do something … I don’t know what feels right to me. I don’t think I have the will for a sacrifice. At this time I feel like I want to give. I feel … I feel blessed enough to share.
(Which isn’t to say that I am without fear and worry, my dad is back in the hospital for the 3rd time since the beginning of December – and as I typed the above paragraph, that hit me hard and I, like the girl in Zoolander (ed Cricket totally called me out – it’s Dodgeball not Zoolander – which the best part is I *looked it up* to make sure I didn’t screw up the reference – and I *still* did), almost threw up in my mouth a little bit.)
Mrs. Flinger’s “A Diet A Day” approach has worked for her – Perhaps Dawn’s “A Lent A Day” will work for me.
For those of you of the Christian persuasion – do you do anything for Lent?

Until exploring the blogosphere I don’t think I had come across lent.

I’ve never “given up” something for Lent…but I do make an effort to spend more time in prayer and the Word, and in quiet reflection. Since…well, high school, I think…Lent has been a powerful season for me, but it’s always different. It’s interesting to watch it play out in my life, if that makes any sense. I wonder what it’ll be like this year..

Sometimes I make the supreme sacrifice of something like coffee or chocolate for that 40 days….most times I am more inclined to add to…as opposed to taking away from….like I will add the morning prayers and scripture reading to my day.
I have been feeling like I wanted to do something special for Lent this year too…and had planned to write about it on the old blog this morning. Maybe we should join Lenten forces?

I am back and just wondering how I missed that your dad was in hospital? I must have been reading too fast.
I will be thinking of him and you okay? Hoping he gets better fast and completely.

Nah, I’ve never done Lent. I always toy with the idea, but haven’t even followed through.
Dawn, I’m so sorry your dad is in the hospital, with the parallels between this season and the one of the past, I’m sure it is even more of a worry for you. (I love that you quoted Zoolander, by the way)

For the first time, I am giving up something for Lent…sweets. Hopefully this will help me lose five pounds, but somehow I don’t think it will…

Hi Dawn – thanks for the friend invitation over at the league! 🙂 Thought I would check out your site. I am giving up candy- mostly because I think it’s the only way I can give it up – labeling it “for lent.” But I also commit to more time in the Word, more prayer, more meditation. Seems like the least I can do after what Christ did on the cross for me.

I can relate a little to the Easter season thing you have with your grandpa. I lost a good friend in high school during the Easter season, and it was years before I could make it through a Easter Morning service without either crying and having to leave.
Since with kids it is harder to make all the Wed services during Lent and Sun Services as well, my Lent thing is to read a Bible passage everyday. I wish I could say I do this every day of the year, but alas I am human.

I used to love Lent when I was Lutheran, walking around with ashes on my head.
I know. Give up movie references for Lent – Dodgeball not Zoolander. Sheesh. 🙂

Aw. I miss my grandfather, too. My son is named after him, and I really wish my kids could have met him.

I wouldn’t call myself a true Christian (haven’t been to church in ages), so my reasons for observing Lent are more selfish, it’s a challenge I present to myself.
I didn’t do anything last year, but the year before I gave up desserts entirely (I would eat sweetened cereal though), the year before that it was chocolate.
So I guess I better come up with an idea quick, huh? Maybe I’ll give up all of the bad things I put into my body like wine and desserts.

I haven’t done anything in many years for Lent, but for years, we gave up ice cream and then, on Easter Sunday, we’d have all you can eat/make your own sundaes for dessert. 😉
Fun memories.

I am Christian, but we have never celebrated Lent. My reason probably don’t belong in the coments section of the blogosphere so I’ll just leave it at that.

I have 100% always respected the rule of fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and staying away from meat every Friday. To me that is a no brainer.
As far as additional things for Lent I really haven’t. I usually have the intention but am never faithful. There was a thing in our church bullitan that had 101 Things to Do for Lent..Not Just for Catholics. I was going to blog about it but just haven’t yet. Things include:
Clean up your language – Watch Schindlers List – Tell a Joke a Day – Listen to someone that you disagree with.
Me..I 100% am giving up any alcohol..which I should do anyway since the hubby doesn’t drink.
I am also going to give up French Fries..because I always cheat and eat some.
I’m also going to try to pray better..and more often.

My son has strict dietary requirements for Lent. Then, on Easter Sunday, there is a huge meatfest barbeque party.

Us Jews don’t do lent…but if I had to do it…I would want to give up something that I really wanted to not give up….that is the only way to truly convey sacrifice…right?

I’ve never observed Lent. I’m a non-tradition Christian… it’s kind of like, hm. I don’t know all the “rules?” I just love God.
